I walked to Ruka in the blizzard for lunch. It was booked full all the other days, but that day nobody was out in the storm, so it was largely empty inside, perfect for taking pictures.
The sashimi was very good – clean, bright, fresh – and the tres leches cake with yuzu ice cream was exceptional. Except for these two bites though, the bento box was just okay at that price point. I prefer Oishii’s and Fins’ lunchtime bentos if in Boston.
But the space – a vibrant, loom-like ceiling, reclaimed wood tables, and dragon green tile. Murals dripping down the walls. At once bold and sullen, dark and lush. It’s Ruka’s interior that is the black pearl.
Now I return to eating salad for lunch.
